Gen. Samuel G. French

Florala News, 21 Apr 1910:

“d. yesterday morning, 91 y/o Capt. S.G. French at the home of his son Mr. R.A. French in this city. He was b.22 NOV 1818 in Glouchester County, NJ,graduating from West Point Academy in 1843. Survived by 2 daughters-Mrs. L. Hilton Green, Pensacola, FL & Mrs. Thompson, Woodbury, NJ and 2 sons-Samuel G. French of Laurel Hill, FL & Mr. R. A. French of Florala ” (This article incorrectly reported Gen. French’s rank as Capt. Also his correct age at death was 92).

Gen. French was buried in Pensacola.

Florala News: Thursday, June 9, 1904

Dr, and Mrs. Jas. H Duer request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter Alys to Mr. Robert A French on Thursday evening, June thirtieth, nineteen hundred and four at half past six o’clock 224 West Fifth Street Jacksonville, Fla. They will be “at home” in Florala after the fifteenth of July.

This portion of a map dated 1922 of Florala is signed by S.G. French, Jr. This confirms that Gen French had not one, but two sons in Florala. 1922 is 12 years after Gen. French died in Florala.

The Robert A French Real Estate and Insurance agency was located in the Flatiron building. Enlarge picture and see sign.
